Relative to the earnings you need and the risk you are willing to take with your money. If you want long term “safe” investment and earn for a nice 5% annually, then you’ll be needing x 20 of what you want to annually earn as your starting capital. If you aim to become a day trading and risk your capital, you could aim for X,XXX % in profit annually, and then you need a much smaller starting point.
This is a good solid service business. But it is competitive, you need to have fully qualified service providers, and you need to look into licensing. No matter how good a service you run, when you deal with the elderly especially there is always legal risk. You can mitigate the risk by incorporating, by getting insurance and by being sure your staff follows accepted medical protocols.
Then don’t sell YOUR product or skills for $5. Other people, your competitors, are allowed to do whatever they want. If someone makes a product and markets it for $5, while you make a product that YOU consider to be much more valued and market it for $100, the consumer still has the power of deciding what they would rather spend their money on. Many people have the impression that in order to launch a business you need to raise millions of dollars. I disagree. What worked for us was making the right decisions early on, and also having tight constraints. When you have constraints you are forced to make highly calculated decisions.
She just created an online store and sold all of her products via her website. If you aren’t creating your own product you can always find a product to dropship – that way you don’t have to store any inventory in your home.
I would recommend that you hyper specialize if you are starting an e-commerce business. Why? Because many e-commerce websites have very deep pockets and patient investors and are willing to sell products for razor thin margins (i.e. Amazon) or even at a loss to build market share. That being said if you can show some solid revenue in this business, and especially if you have repeat customers, you will have a business that is worth a lot of money even before it is profitable.
If you’ve already created a successful business then you can pass that knowledge along to someone else for a fee – such as market research, business plan narrative, and financial statements. New business owners are more than willing to pay a someone who has successfully started a business to help guide them in developing their own successful business plan.
That’s why I’m a huge advocate of always starting a side business while working full-time, so that you can test your way into your new product or service, get feedback, validate the business idea, and start generating income before you quit your job. If you can master the art of scaling a side business idea while keeping your day job, you’ll have no trouble succeeding once you’re fully self-employed.

You are selling the latest technology, there is a strong service component, and your target market is businesses that can afford to spend a lot of money for this valuable service. For example, with a key control system a company can limit the hours that some employees may access their facility and if they let go an employee they can just de-activate their card, rather than having to call a locksmith to redo every lock.
Ghostwriting pays pretty well, and if you’re talented at researching and creating great content within a certain subject domain, you can quickly build a roster of high-paying clientele with this business idea. I suppose I can say I did this business once too! Or more specifically my father paid me to deliver promotional flyers for his candidacy for town meeting member. The flyers worked and he won! Yes, I had a couple golf lessons–but you’d never know it to watch me play! I don’t think I had the right personality for this sport–relaxing and being patient isn’t my thing! But if you have some talent at this challenging game, you can charge some good money and bring your gift to others. Golf is an excellent lifetime sport and people are willing to pay to try to master it!
Several of my friends have done this both as a side business and a main business. The ones doing it as a side business have actually done better. I think that is partly because they have waited patiently for better deals to buy.
